Seed brief: The room change

Full spoilers for chapters 2–10.

The adaptation: the chapter 2 bombing of Zei's Decentralized University (DU) physics class, told from the side of whoever moved the class at the last minute. Zei and Fin credit that person with saving their lives (c2-b124). Zei later reads the move as defense work (c9-b76).

Source: the committed chapter text in content/snowmoon/text/. Block IDs are c<chapter>-b<idx>. The bombing is on 3724 Snowmoon 5 in Pafogai Du, Dzego (c2-b1). Zei's later reflection is on 3724 Rainmoon 28 (c9-b1).

What the text shows of this person. It shows the messenger, not the decider:

  • A man waits at the bottom of the stairs with the change of plans (c2-b35). He walks back up with Fin, Zei and a young woman, and sits down in the class with them (c2-b37). Zei remembers him as "the man who had redirected them last minute" (c2-b103).
  • Whoever decided the move is never shown or named: "Whoever moved our room last-minute was a genius" (c2-b124).
  • The text does not say whether the man and the decider are the same person. The adaptation can follow the messenger, the decider, or both.

Blocks c2-b123 and c2-b124 ("Wow, the Arctics are getting aggressive…" and "Whoever moved our room…") are spoken by Fin or Zei. The text does not attribute them. The same is true of the exchange about the yellow check and the route, c2-b26–c2-b30.

Setting

  • The street: Hun Min street in Pafogai Du. Low-rise electronics shops, tiny factories and stairways underground (c2-b3). A sensor shop beside a foil shop, under the sign "zui fia kun zun", "Underground safe place" (c2-b4–c2-b7). Trees shade the sidewalks (c2-b9).
  • The address grid: named streets are 200 meters apart; house numbers are meters (c2-b31). The grid is also described at c4-b53.
  • The building: at Mun Gui 1842 (c2-b24, c2-b29), with dusty stairs (c2-b34). The original room was two floors down. The class met in "the opposite room on floor -1" (c2-b35, c2-b37, c2-b103).
  • The room:
    • Walls under thick, hastily applied anti-transmission foil, painted with cartoon animals (c2-b38).
    • An inflated pig holding a calculator and a hamster holding a vial, together holding DU's motto (c2-b38–c2-b40).
    • Rows of chairs (c2-b37). Slides on the front wall (c2-b54).
  • The blast: "a nearby room" (c2-b98). The wall and the floor came down (c2-b99). The text does not say whether the blast was in the original room.

Objects

Screens and figures

  • Screen: c2-b24 (the decrypted location and time).
  • Figures (lecture slides): c2-b55, c2-b71.

How Dzego coordinates, as the book explains it

  • "Grow roots, no head": c2-b8, c2-b128.
  • Anonymous cryptographic coordination that "all of DU already runs" on: c2-b128.
  • Cryptographic networks for voting in DU: c19-b149.
  • Networks that handle "governance for Dzego's secret societies": c9-b67.
  • The Kungaupei, Dzego's defense society, as Zei first hears of it: c9-b56–c9-b57.
  • Arctic spies inside the agencies: c5-b77.

2. What the text gives and what an adapter must invent

Given

  • The exact timeline:
    • 69,000: the location broadcast (c2-b22–c2-b24).
    • 1,000 ticks is about ten minutes (c2-b31).
    • Arrival "a few minutes later" (c2-b34).
    • 70,001: the door closes (c2-b41).
  • The building's layout, as far as two floors and an "opposite room" (c2-b34–c2-b37).
  • The messenger's single line and where he stood (c2-b35).
  • That a young woman who knew Fin by name met them first (c2-b34).
  • That the messenger and the woman then sat in the class (c2-b37).
  • That the precautions were deliberate: new cryptography, sudden location changes, foil (c2-b104).
  • That DU runs on anonymous cryptographic coordination (c2-b128).
  • That Zei later reads the room change as "secretive, well-coordinated", "exactly that kind of work" as the defense work Den recruits him for (c9-b73, c9-b76).

To invent

  • Who decided the move, and how. The text says "whoever" (c2-b124).
  • What they knew, and when. Whether there was a tip, a pattern, or a guess.
  • Why they moved the class one floor up instead of cancelling it or clearing the building, given that the blast still broke the floor and injured Zei (c2-b99–c2-b100, c2-b112).
  • What the messenger knew when he said "Change of plans" (c2-b35), and why he then sat in the class (c2-b37).
  • Whether anyone was in the "nearby room" (c2-b98), and whether it was the original room.
  • Whether the decider is connected to the Kungaupei or Den. The text links the act to "that kind of work" (c9-b76), not to a person.
  • Whether the decider ever learns of Zei's arm, or that Zei goes into defense (c9-b76, c10-b194).
  • The young woman (c2-b34). The text gives no name or role.
  • Whether anyone from Zei's DU chapter besides Fin was in the room. Bai is in the same chapter (c5-b80), but the text does not place her there.

Conflicts between the text and the seeded art

The seeded illustration c2-b038-foil-classroom (content/snowmoon/illustrations/chapter-2.json) shows the pig and the hamster holding "a plain blank banner". The text puts DU's motto on that poster (c2-b38–c2-b40).

3. Who is in it

Person Looks (text) Sound (text)
The messenger (the man at the stairs) "Another man was waiting" at the bottom of two flights (c2-b35). Nothing else is described. One line: "Change of plans, it's in the opposite room on floor -1 now." (c2-b35).
The decider Never shown. Never heard. Known only through "Whoever moved our room last-minute was a genius" (c2-b124) and "secretive, well-coordinated" (c9-b76).
The young woman "A young woman" who shouts on their arrival (c2-b34). "Oh Fin, there you are!" (c2-b34).
The instructor Walks in behind the students and closes the door (c2-b41). Uses a watch for slides (c2-b54) and a hand device for injuries (c2-b109). The text does not describe his appearance; "his" at c2-b54 gives the pronoun. Warm and Socratic ("Yes, excellent!", c2-b69). Calls Zei "kid" (c2-b95). Steady in the aftermath ("The sooner you go, the sooner you will get better.", c2-b112). Dry ("I think we've had enough entropy for one day.", c2-b120). Grave about the Arctics (c2-b125–c2-b129).
Zei His arm is struck by stone (c2-b100). Left arm broken (c2-b109). Healed after a month (c9-b75). Quick and exact (c2-b31, c2-b89–c2-b91). Swallows a joke (c2-b93). Makes one in the smoke ("I think we know much less about this wall than we knew two minutes ago", c2-b116).
Fin Uninjured; pulls Zei up (c2-b107). Sweeps the debris (c2-b122). Easy and laughing (c2-b20). Practical ("I'll take you", c2-b113).
Other students A girl runs a finger under the table edge out of habit. Another student waves her hand device around the room (c2-b46). About ten shout answers together (c2-b58). One works out "five point seven" digits (c2-b75–c2-b77). About ten say "I'm fine" (c2-b119).
Den (only if the adaptation links the act to defense) A priest's shadowy cloak (c9-b52). "Well, Zei, I want to recruit you into defense." (c9-b73).

5. Open creative questions

  1. Messenger, decider, or both? Whose point of view is it: the man at the bottom of the stairs (c2-b35), the unseen "whoever" (c2-b124), or both? And does the adaptation keep them anonymous, as "grow roots, no head" coordination implies (c2-b128)?
  2. What did they know, and why only one floor? Why move the class one floor up rather than cancel it, given that the move still left a boy with a broken arm (c2-b100, c2-b112)?
  3. Is it someone already in the book? Possibilities include the young woman who knew Fin by name (c2-b34), someone in Bai's DU chapter (c5-b80), or the defense network behind Den (c9-b56, c9-b76). Or is it a stranger the book never meets? The text supports none of these over the others.

6. Suggested length and beats

Suggestion only. A short story of 2,500–3,500 words, or an 8–10 minute audio piece.

  1. Morning, Snowmoon 5. A reason for suspicion arrives. (Invented.) The new proof system is going out (c2-b26).
  2. 69,000. The encrypted location goes out; the address is fixed (c2-b22–c2-b24).
  3. The decision: move within the building, up one floor (c2-b35, c2-b103), coordinated without a head (c2-b128).
  4. At the bottom of the stairs. The young woman brings Fin and Zei down (c2-b34). "Change of plans" (c2-b35).
  5. Back up one flight. The foil room, the four of them in a row; the door closes at 70,001 (c2-b37–c2-b41).
  6. The lecture, heard by someone waiting for something to happen: the jars, the proof, "you got it per-" (c2-b56–c2-b97).
  7. The blast. Wall and floor (c2-b98–c2-b99); the boy's arm (c2-b100, c2-b109–c2-b112).
  8. The aftermath. Smoke, filters, the broom (c2-b108–c2-b122). "Whoever moved our room last-minute was a genius" (c2-b124), overheard or not.
  9. Coda, Rainmoon 28. The boy decides to do "exactly that kind of work" (c9-b76), whether or not the decider ever knows.
