About

Independent adaptation · Not affiliated with the author · No token

Snowmoon was written by Vitalik Buterin and released under the GNU General Public License v3. The original is at https://vitalik.eth.limo/snowmoon/.

This project is an independent adaptation. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the author.

License

This app and everything used to make it are GPL-3.0: the code, the ingest and analysis scripts, the prompts, and the data. The source is at https://github.com/We-Are-Lum/snowmoon.

The author has said that he reads the GPL to mean that anyone may adapt the book, but must open-source the pipeline they used to make it: AI prompts, scripts, task-specific harness, and other non-commodity materials. That is his own stated reading, and it has not been tested. This project follows it because publishing how everything was made is the point, not because it is settled law.

Your words are public

Public, permanent, GPL-3.0, shown with your name. You can hide it. Before your first contribution of your own words, you are asked to agree to this, and the app records who agreed, when, and to which wording:

What you write here (a prompt, a line, a description) is published with what it makes.

It is public: anyone can read it, signed in or not, including the prompt that made an image or a voice.

It is permanent: the project keeps the record. You can hide your own work at any time, and it disappears from view at once. Moderators can also hide it. Copies others have already made may remain.

It is licensed GPL-3.0, like everything in this edition, so others may copy and adapt it under the same license.

It is shown with your name: your Farcaster name, or, for a wallet account, its address shortened.

To make an image, your prompt is sent to Groq to be checked (through Vercel AI Gateway when Groq is busy) and to fal.ai to make it, and your Farcaster ID to Neynar to check your account's score. In Remix, every frame you make is saved and public at its link as soon as it is made, with your words. Elsewhere, drafts you don’t publish stay on your device.

Every published image and voice links to its recipe, including the exact prompt, readable without signing in. The prompts of your drafts and abandoned attempts are not published.

Listen as a podcast: the house narration, one chapter per episode, as a feed for any podcast app. It is also on Spotify ↗.

The reading assistant

The assistant answers questions about the book with gpt-oss-120b, an open-weights model. Your questions are saved only on your device and never published. To be answered, each one is sent to Groq, or through Vercel AI Gateway when Groq is busy, with zero data retention required; this app keeps no copy, only a count and the cost.

Groq keeps customer data in the United States and runs data centres in the US, Canada, Finland, Saudi Arabia and Australia. Which of its data centres answers a given question is not known to this app; it is unverified.

The assistant is being tested: its answers can be wrong, so check the quotes it shows, which are the book’s own words.

Pictures (Trial)

Invited readers can make an image for a passage, with Z-Image Turbo, an open-weights model (Apache-2.0). Your prompt is sent to Groq to be checked against the published rules (with gpt-oss-safeguard-20b), then to fal.ai to make the image. Both are asked to keep nothing: fal.ai returns the image in its reply and keeps no copy of the request. The image is shown to you as a draft, kept only on your device; it becomes public only if you publish it. The book's text is never sent to a model.

Neynar receives your Farcaster ID when you make an image, to look up its account score, which decides whether you can make images. The score is kept for a day.

Rules: No real people. No sexual content. Nothing violent or hateful. No characters or logos from other works. Don’t ask for words in the picture.

A published image shows who made it, that it is AI-generated and not by the author, and its recipe with the exact prompt. It is shown with your name (Farcaster name or wallet address). A Farcaster name is the one Farcaster's relay gave our server when you signed in on this website; otherwise our server asks Farcaster's public API (api.farcaster.xyz) for the username of your Farcaster ID, sending only the ID, and keeps the answer for a day. Its maker can hide it at once. Anyone signed in can report it: one report of anything sexual involving a minor hides it at once, and three reports from different people hide it until a moderator looks. Moderators can only hide. This app counts how many images each person makes a day; what they cost is kept as daily totals, with no names; a published image’s recipe shows its own cost.

Readers can also publish styles and character sheets. Their names and text are published like prompts: public, permanent, GPL-3.0, under the maker’s name, and added in full to the prompts of images that use them.

Signing in

Reading needs no account. Saving cards, liking, making images and asking the assistant need a Farcaster sign-in. Inside a Farcaster app it happens by itself. On this website, signing in goes through two Farcaster services: its relay (relay.farcaster.xyz), which passes the request to your Farcaster app, and its sign-in server (auth.farcaster.xyz), which checks your signature against the Optimism network through node providers Farcaster does not name. They see your Farcaster ID and that you signed in here, not what you read or ask. You stay signed in for an hour, kept on this device, not in a cookie.

Where it runs

Vercel hosts the site and sees your IP address and browser details, as any web host does. Cloudflare stores and serves the pictures and audio. Supabase holds the database. A report link for the narration opens GitHub or Farcaster, where what you post is public. When an image is reported, ntfy delivers us a short alert that carries no content and nothing about you. Every outside service, and what each receives, is in the Privacy Policy; the rules for using this site are in the Terms.
