Seed brief: Lily in the Arctic classroom
Full spoilers for chapters 1–31.
The adaptation: Lily contradicts her Arctic civics instructor and is put in detention. The book never shows this scene. Zven reports it to Gladias and Seila, about Lily, in a hotel room (c28-b59–c28-b68). The adaptation draws on:
- the Helisport scoring argument (c16-b62–c16-b75), which is the substance of her objection;
- Lord Ephelion's broadcast that she stared at in chapter 13 (c13-b61–c13-b69);
- her leaving home in chapter 23 (c23-b79–c23-b99).
Source: the committed chapter text in content/snowmoon/text/. Block IDs are c<chapter>-b<idx>.
Dates:
- Zven's report: 3724 Frostime 15 (dateline c28-b1). The class itself is undated. Lily was talking to Zven "the whole time" (c28-b64), so the report comes after the class.
- The broadcast: 3724 Harvestmoon 8 (c13-b1).
- Her leaving: reported by Seila in a call on the night of 3724 Mistime 22 (c23-b1, c23-b74).

Dialogue
- Lily's own spoken words in scenes:
- "Sixty percent on the history exam. Whatever..." (c1-b119)
- "You've already tried … FIFTY-NINE PERCENT. Third-worst in the class." (c8-b116)
- "Uncle Vil, Aunt Daia, Mom! I got eighty one percent on my latest civics test!" (c21-b19)
- "Dad!" (c31-b77)
- "Yay!" (c31-b91)
- "I'm sorry, Mom." (c31-b81) is unattributed. It follows Lily's hug and Gladias's greeting, so it is probably hers.
- Lily's arguments, reported by others:
- The instructor, reported by Zven: c28-b63, c28-b65.
- Ephelion:
- Helisport scoring, Febric and Gladias: c16-b67–c16-b75.
- Parents reacting to the news: c28-b69–c28-b81.
- Gladias's comfort and Vil's incentive: c8-b113, c8-b115, c8-b117–c8-b120.
Setting
- The boarding school: "some kind of boarding school that the Arctics set up. About one kilometer away from the GPH" (c26-b63). It will not let her leave (c28-b84).
- The civics class: c28-b63. The text gives no physical detail of the room, the building or the detention.
- Northglade:
- The family restaurant with the screen: c13-b49, c13-b61–c13-b67.
- The family home and Lily's room (with a window and a mirror): c1-b109–c1-b124, c23-b81, c23-b91.
Objects
- Neck band: c28-b64.
- Hand device and its unnamed game: c1-b124, c13-b68, c16-b78–c16-b80.
- The Arctic chat group: c23-b84.
- The watch she throws onto an autobus: c23-b93.
- The new device she logs in from: c24-b10.
- Helisport equipment:
- Colorball, the school game Helisport grew from: c8-b64.
Screens
- Ephelion's broadcast: c13-b64.
- Helisport scoreboards (counts per ball type, then a combined score): c16-b62, c16-b66.
- Vil's message about the failed test: c8-b104.
- Seila's red call request: c23-b75.
The scoring argument
The book lays out the scoring argument three times:
- Febric's history of the sport (c16-b68–c16-b73).
- The scoreboards (c16-b62, c16-b66). Each combined score is the product of the three counts: 6 × 9 × 31 = 1,674; 11 × 7 × 23 = 1,771; 6 × 10 × 31 = 1,860. The text never states the formula; it says the score was made "multiplicative" (c16-b70).
- Lily's version, through Zven (c28-b64). She says that with added points the best strategy is almost always to focus on one ball type, and that multiplying makes balance pay.
2. What the text gives and what an adapter must invent
Given
- The argument on both sides, nearly word for word, though only in Zven's retelling (c28-b63–c28-b66).
- That Lily stood up (c28-b64).
- That she was not alone. Zven was on her neck band "the whole time", Febric joined, and "We went through the history of Helisport" (c28-b64).
- The instructor's gesture ("threw up his hands") and his claim (c28-b65).
- The punishment (c28-b67) and her conclusion (c28-b68).
- The ideas she is answering:
- The instructor's "focusing on only one thing" (c28-b65) restates Ephelion's case for the one vector that compounds (c8-b35).
- Ephelion's broadcast pre-empts the multi-dimensional reply: "Do not think that the idea that there are multiple dimensions to goodness and to success saves you from this" (c13-b64).
- What she believed when she left: success-conditioned love as motivation (c23-b88). This echoes the broadcast's "give you love when you win, and a cold shoulder when you lose" (c13-b64).
To invent
- Lily's appearance. The text gives none. Her only physical descriptions are posture and action: eyes to the ground (c1-b117), turning away (c1-b121, c8-b114), crying (c8-b110), staring (c13-b66), running into a room (c21-b18) and a hug (c31-b77). Her age is never stated.
- The room, the building, the other students, the language of instruction, and what Arctic "civics" covers.
- The instructor's name, face, age and voice. The text gives only "he" (c28-b65).
- How the neck band conversation works in a classroom without being caught, and whether the instructor notices.
- What detention is in an Arctic boarding school, and how long it lasts.
- How Lily got from Meldan to the school. The text gives only the facts in c26-b62–c26-b63 and the open travel in c26-b66.
- What the game on her hand device is (c16-b80). Whether it connects to the Arctic chat group (c23-b84) is not said.
Conflicts between the text and the seeded art
The seeded illustration c28-b064-lily-stands-up (content/snowmoon/illustrations/chapter-28.json) invents a classroom with "identical pale desks", an instructor "in a stiff grey uniform" with crossed arms, and students "in matching outfits". None of these is in the text. The prompt does include the neck band, which the text supports (c28-b64).
3. Who is in it
The design board's about fields say that every character look on the board is invented except for the facts listed. The "Looks" column below gives only what the text says.
| Person | Looks (text) | Sound (text) |
|---|---|---|
| Lily | Not described. Eyes to the ground (c1-b117, c13-b57). Turns her face away (c1-b121, c8-b114). Cries (c8-b110). Sits still and stares at the broadcast (c13-b58, c13-b66). Absorbed in a game (c1-b124, c13-b68). Lights up and quietly cheers (c13-b69). Rushes in with news (c21-b18). Runs to hug her father (c31-b77). Dislikes the cold (c17-b108). | Flat and dismissive ("Whatever...", c1-b119). Loud in distress ("FIFTY-NINE PERCENT", c8-b116). Bright in triumph (c21-b19). Her two arguments come only through others (c23-b88 via Seila; c28-b64, c28-b66 via Zven). |
| The Arctic instructor | Not described beyond "he" (c28-b65). | Dismissive. Calls the scoring "stupid", "an example of how Veridians like to overcomplicate things" (c28-b63). "Threw up his hands" (c28-b65). |
| Zven | A boy who jumps down the stairs three at a time (c1-b110). Jumps onto a sofa (c28-b57). Yellow team shirt at Helisport (c11-b24). | Excited ("I have some good news. It's Lily!", c28-b59). Loyal ("Anything for my sister.", c24-b13). |
| Febric | An older teenage boy with a hand device cabled to a compute box (c1-b111). | Enthusiastic explainer of the scoring history (c16-b67–c16-b73). "The math is almost as fun as the actual game!" (c16-b75). |
| Lord Ephelion | Appears as an image beside his message (c13-b63). The text gives no description. | The broadcast's imperatives (c13-b64). The debate's long cadences (c8-b27–c8-b35). Gladias calls him "a gifted demagogue" (c8-b37). |
| Seila | Not described. | Shouting in capitals on the call (c23-b79, c23-b95–c23-b96, c23-b98). Tender earlier ("It's okay to not be good at everything", c1-b120). Practical after the news (c28-b87). |
| Gladias | Not described in these scenes. | Reassuring (c8-b113–c8-b119). Self-righteous after the news (c28-b69–c28-b74). |
| Other students | Not in the text. | None. |

5. Open creative questions
- Whose voice tells it? Options include Lily in the first person, the book's own frame of Zven relaying it in the hotel room (c28-b59–c28-b68), or both. And how much of the argument is hers, and how much is fed live by Zven and Febric through the neck band (c28-b64)?
- Does she know whom she is answering? The instructor's line (c28-b65) is Ephelion's argument (c8-b35, c13-b64). The broadcast already dismissed the "multiple dimensions" reply that she makes. Does she know she is also answering what she herself told Seila on the night she left (c23-b88)?
- What does the room look like, and who is in it? The text gives nothing about the school, the classmates or the instructor (see section 2). Are the other students Northgladers, Arctics, or other runaways like her?
6. Suggested length and beats
Suggestion only. A short story of 2,000–3,000 words, or a 6–8 minute audio drama or short film.
- Harvestmoon 8. The family restaurant. The Helisport game cuts to Ephelion; Lily stares while Seila hunts for the plug (c13-b61–c13-b66).
- The game on her device; a private cheer (c13-b68–c13-b69).
- The window (c23-b91) and the watch thrown onto an autobus (c23-b93). Brief, or as a memory.
- Northglade, winter. The Arctic boarding school she cannot leave (c26-b63, c28-b84). A new device, Zven on the line (c24-b10). (The place is invented.)
- Civics class. The instructor mocks Helisport scoring (c28-b63).
- On the neck band, Zven and Febric give her the history (c28-b64, drawing on c16-b68–c16-b73). She stands and argues added versus multiplied points (c28-b64).
- "In real life you win by focusing on only one thing" (c28-b65).
- Her reply: the work, the bigger house, and the hours left to enjoy it (c28-b66).
- Detention (c28-b67). "They talk about striving for the best, but really they just care about their own authority" (c28-b68). She wants to come home (c28-b61).
